One of my very favorite French films of the past 20 years, I don’t think Cyril Collard’s Les Nuits Fauves has ever seen an English-friendly DVD release, so this would be among my first choices among modern films. Maximilian Schell’s brilliant documentary Marlene amazed me when I first viewed it at the Detroit Film Theater back in 1984, and again, no English subtitled release. Kobayashi’s Ningen no joken (The Human Condition) was once available from Image Entertainment, but, like many of their titles, it has long since gone out of print (though it’s still available from private sellers at ridiculous prices). I thought Criterion was supposed to have come out with a new release sometime last year, but I haven’t heard anything about it since. As far as Korean releases go, I would like to see more works by Kim Ki-young and Shin Sang-ok released on DVD.
I should say I already own the French releases of Collard’s and Kobayashi’s films, but I can’t enjoy watching them with my friends…
