One of my very favorite French films of the past 20 years, I don’t think Cyril Collard’s Les Nuits Fauves has ever seen an English-friendly DVD release, so this would be among my first choices among modern films. Maximilian Schell’s brilliant documentary Marlene amazed me when I first viewed it at the Detroit Film Theater back in 1984, and again, no English subtitled release. Kobayashi’s Ningen no joken (The Human Condition) was once available from Image Entertainment, but, like many of their titles, it has long since gone out of print (though it’s still available from private sellers at ridiculous prices). I thought Criterion was supposed to have come out with a new release sometime last year, but I haven’t heard anything about it since. As far as Korean releases go, I would like to see more works by Kim Ki-young and Shin Sang-ok released on DVD.

I should say I already own the French releases of Collard’s and Kobayashi’s films, but I can’t enjoy watching them with my friends…

- RAD! The greatest BMX movie ever made. It had a re-emergence on american HDTV a couple of years ago which showed that a restored HD-print is available. Still the movie has yet to come out (there are loads of us who’ve been waiting for years and VHS tapes are still selling at ridiculous prices).

- Early Tsukamoto with english subs (as far as I know only out in japan and italy, with no subs).

- Did Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Loft” ever come out anywhere???

- What about MindGame and Genius Party? Is there anything other than expensive japanses DVDs available with subs???

Look no further than Australia!
“Mindgame” and “Genius Party” should be out already in R4 PAL-DVD (since 24th of June), with “Genius Party Beyond” following soon (September 29th).

Well, the movie quiz brought up a real gem which is unfortunately either Out-Of-Print or without subtitles:

Seventh Curse.
It’s a splatter-version of Indiana Jones by way of Hong-Kong with (among others) Chow Yun Fat and Maggie Chung, featuring flesh-eating skeletons, worms of all sizes, bazookas, a meat-grinding baby ghost, (other) alien monsters, nudity and loads and loads of gore. And I keep reading the special effects are pretty decent, so you’ve got to love this! Directed by the guy who did “Story of Ricky”.

The only way to currently buy this English-friendly is through VCD. Come on people…

That was then…
This is now:

Has been out for over a year, actually… I need to pay better attention.

I have no problem finding Genius Party, but I can’t find Mindgame. Shooks…

If push comes to shove, you can always buy it straight from the distributor:

That’s Australian dollars by the way, before you get frightened… cheese

This vendor ships “Mind Game” internationally, automatically deducts VAT for foreigners and I have had very good dealings with him in the past:
