I’m dying for Akihiko Shiota’s Harmful Insect to hit R1 DVD. I want some English subs dammit.

I can’t remember if I posted this on the old thread or not.  If I did, then I think it still deserves mention.  I would really like to own Children Of Nature on DVD.  I have an old VHS copy that I’m afraid to watch for fear of my VHS player eating it up.  I’ve done some searches for a DVD release, but nothing comes up.

I don’t see the rights issue clearing up anytime soon for Rolling Thunder, sadly.

Films I love that I want to see released on DVD are:

* Baciamo le mani
* Pretty Maids all in a row
* Fear is the Key
* Clash of Egos (with English subtitles!) * Haven’t seen but sure I would like it.
* Crazy Thunder Road (with English subtitles!)
* Sitting Target
* Traveling Executioner
* Dion Brothers/Gravy Train
* The Outfit
* Psycho from Texas * With CD Soundtrack
* All of Toshio Masuda’s Nikkatsu films
* Savage Seven
* Freebie and the Bean
* Early Fernando Di Leo films
* All remaining Melville films
* Alias Nick Beal
* Gambit
* Hammerhead
* The Blade (Tsui Hark film; in a restored HD version would be even better!!!)
* Dark Age
* Four Desperate Men
* A ton of great Canadian horror films from I believe the late 70’s/early 80’s that I’ve grown very partial to over the years (Final Exam, etc.,). I’m sure there is a ton I’ve missed as well (note that I really need to buy the book that covers it when I find time).

I’m sure I could think of more… just off the top of my head these come to mind. I would say Road Warrior but it now is out on HD-DVD!

Those Sogo I and Koji Wakamatsu films that have all been released in Japan should be available with English subs for the rest of the world!

A few weird cult titles i’d like to see too: Squareworld, L’Urlo, Vase de Noces, Green Elephant Calf

Still waiting for the region 1 release of Karaoke Terror that has been announced ‘years’ ago

A bit of Dutch childtime nostalgia: the announced release of ‘Thomas & Senior’ also still hasn’t happened.
And I like to see ‘de Familie Robinson’ too (with the Dutch voices ofcourse). This is Kazoku Robinson hyôryûki-fu shi no Flone to the rest of the world http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168341/

Fantasy stuff: Deodato’s Barbarians. I can’t understand why this hasn’t been released even in the cheapest of transfers, anywhere. Even Hundra, maybe the most literal of all Conan clones but pretty obscure, has been released! twice even!

And I’d really would like to own a few more Ryuichi Hiroki titles (l’amant, it’s only talk, girlfriend, baku shi)

art-house: Kira Murotova’s Astenicheskiy sindrom, and the movies of Sharunas Bartas and Yefgeni Yufit!!!!
noir et blanc http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091646/ also

and re-releases (or just more widely available releases; with a lot of extra’s grin) of the Baby of Macon and Hal Hartley’s Trust

thought of yet a few more: with Antonioni passing away, a better release of Zabriskie Point would be nice

and these two movies played at Sundance once and haven’t been released ever, as far as I know:
Moebius
the Pigeon Egg Strategy
I haven’t seen both of them, but they sound very intriguing and I’ve been waiting for years now to one day get a glimpse…

* The Blade (Tsui Hark film; in a restored HD version would be even better!!!)

R2 United Kingdom - (MIA)
Extras:Original Theatrical Trailer
Subtitles:English (non-removable)
Aspect Ratio:1.85:1
Picture Format:Non-Anamorphic
TV System:PAL
Soundtrack(s):Cantonese Dolby Digital 2.0
SurroundCase type:Amaray (Keep)
CaseNotes:Subtitles are not widescreen-friendly (i.e. they are burnt on over the black bar at the bottom so if you zoom in on a widescreen tv you crop them off).

I was super lucky to have seen a near mint film print screening of Tsui Hark’s “The Blade.” Hard to even explain how hard/strong of a red color he uses in it. It feels blinding. On all the home video releases I’ve checked out (the numerous DVD’s, VHS and the laserdisc) none of them come close to having that red or other colors used so vividly. The other really glaring thing on the releases is the end fight with all the swords. In the theatrical version the metal clanging nearly splits your eardrum, all the while these pounding drums fill out the sound. On all the home video releases they just never have the proper mix of this - you get a lot of one sound and not a lot of the other, whereas the film print marries them both. As it stands I feel the laserdisc is the closest version, with the VHS coming in behind it.

Urgh! A Music War

nice one, I want that one too, if only for the reason that it contains the only footage of the Au Pairs that I have ever seen anywhere. An essential music document. Would be nice to have loads of extra concert footage as bonus grin

I would also like to add the name of Edward Yang to my wishlist, haven’t seen any of his movies yet and I think only Yi Yi has gotten any kind of DVD release.
and:
American independent film “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me”
another childhood favorite, the Burt Lancaster adventure film “the Flame and the Arrow”
Dutch cult comedy series “We Zijn Weer Thuis”
Belgian cult comedy show “Lava tv”
Japanese horror film “Lucky Sky Diamond” aka Bloody Fragments on a White Wall

so, to reiterate, the thing I want most is more boxes:
koji wakamatsu boxes with subs
sogo ishii early film box with subs
ryuichi hiroki box (there just isn’t a market for a stand alone release of “baku shi” I think)
boxes of recently deceased auteurs (antonioni, yang) always a good excuse
extreme art boxes (squareworld, vase de noces and green elephant calf are very easy to bundle with the works of phillipe grandrieux and yefgeni yufit and movies like Irreversible, Salo, Begotten, Pentimento, Tetsuo ... I could envision a whole series of these boxes that fill the dark gap between experimental art en exploitation/horror)
There might not be a big market for stand alone releases for any of these movies, but in boxes I think the quantity factor could persuade loads of adventurous movie fans to a purchase.

Well, the movie quiz brought up a real gem which is unfortunately either Out-Of-Print or without subtitles:

Seventh Curse.
It’s a splatter-version of Indiana Jones by way of Hong-Kong with (among others) Chow Yun Fat and Maggie Chung, featuring flesh-eating skeletons, worms of all sizes, bazookas, a meat-grinding baby ghost, (other) alien monsters, nudity and loads and loads of gore. And I keep reading the special effects are pretty decent, so you’ve got to love this! Directed by the guy who did “Story of Ricky”.

The only way to currently buy this English-friendly is through VCD. Come on people…

The two films I’m looking out for the most or both of Hiroyuki Tanaka. It’s a wonder how badly available his DVDs are with English subs:

* Monday
* Blessing Bell

Sogo Ishii has a similar problem:

* Kyoshin
* Yume no Ginga

Completing the list are:

* Rabbits (Lynch)
* Small Gods
* Baober in Love

Sometimes being an eager customer with money in his pocket just isn’t enough.

I agree with all the Sogo Ishii, Koji Wakamatsu, Ryuichi Hiroki. Just want to add the films of Sion Sono, early Chan Wook Park, Terayama, Teshigahara’s unreleased works with Kobo Abe such as Man Without A Map, Billionaire, and Thick Walled Room. Also before I die I would love to see The Day the Clown Cried.
edit
almost forgot that Dave Mckean DVD that was promised so many times and has yet to be released. Also Shozin Fukui’s Den-Sen, The Hiding, and Onne and Nishimura’s Speakerman the Boo.
