The first two were pretty good, but I was horribly disappointed with Last Life. Maybe arthouse fare just isn’t meant for simple me.
Interesting. I personally think that Taste of tea and Last life in the universe are the good ones from that bunch and Koi no mon the weakest (by a large margin). Then again, last life.. is definetly very arthouse and an acquired taste in many cases - a second viewing later might change your mind, so keep it on the shelf

Strange. Save for the languid demeanor it’s not one I’d peg as much of arty flick at all…in fact I think it serves itself up pretty well as one for the shallow end as an intro to the ‘asian miserablism’ field. Then again I wasn’t sold on my first viewing eiher but it creeped up on me and turned out to be a certified favourite.
Anyway I bit at my leesh and..

Also I noticed Play has the 5 disc Blade Runner UE (minus the suitcase) for pre-order at £18. Cheap!

Godzilla (US, not great, but if I’m in the mood for stuff to blow up, this’ll scratch the itch)

Received Masters Of Cinema: Prisoner of Shark Island yesterday.
“Dragon Princess” / “Karate Warriors” - BCI, Grindhouse double bill of Chiba Chiba!
“A Tale of Two Cities” - Special Edition.
Glorious stuff this, with an amazing perfrormance by Dirk Bogarde and a real lump in the throat finale.
The pretty, young, servant girl being conforted by Bogarde as she goes to the guillotine, with her beautiful and slender neck bared ready for the blade, as she tearfully but bravely walks to her fate was an image that stuck with me from childhood. Powerful stuff, expertly perfromed and crafted.

Well, last Life just didn’t do it for me as well, although I usually like that ‘type’ of films. I thought it was boring frankly… I really wanted to like it and I think I’ll give it another chance sometime.
Anyway, from hanbook I received:
- Ruler of your own world. I’ve already seen about 6 episodes and I’m hooked.
see wong in ‘the color of the truth’. i’m convinced the man speaks pretty good english, he has quite a few lines in this film and he sounds natural, aware of what he’s saying.

I’m of the same opinion after seeing The Painted Veil, he sounds very natural. Being in Hong Kong it isn’t a stretch to assume that he speaks pretty good English in real life.
