After a heated discussion and explaining that Tarkovsky’s “Stalker” is NOT A SEXY SLASHER FLICK (title notwithstanding) I decided to go hunt down the best version I could find.

And discovered that Amazon-UK had an interesting two-for-the-price-of-one deal, so I bought:

“Stalker”
“Solyaris”

Both by Artificial Eye, a distributor I am starting to like more and more with each title I buy from them…

those two are my favourite Tarkovsky. doncha want the Criterion 2-disc Solaris, my friend?

btw, the recent spate of sales got me going a bit.

got Brazil the Criterion 3-disc edition which i’ve been eyeing practically for years.

then got Ugetsu Monogatari and Bicycle Thieves on Criterion at Barnes & Noble’s sale.

Columbia Pictures also had an anniversary sale, so i got the 2-disc Taxi Driver, which has a commentary by my favourite film analyst Robert Kolker, and the homoerotic Lawrence Of Arabia 2-disc edition.

For Christmas I threw in some hints regarding the complete Quantum Leap collection (faulty final discs of season 5 have thankfully been withdrawn) and the complete series of Rab C. Nesbitt. Few more pending.

I tend to pick up my DVDs at a second hand place. Living in the student area of Cardiff means that they blow their loans on cult movies then trade them in for beer money a month later.

This week I found:

Willard - Great movie, even better making of doc!
Zodiac
Cry Baby
Who Killed Bambi - A really creepy French thriller about a doctor who drugs female patients at night
La Cage Aux Folles I & II - I didn’t mind The Birdcage, but nothing matches the overload of camp hysteria in the originals

I work in film PR, so I get a few freebies, best of the bunch recently was The Bronx Warriors Trilogy steel Tin, I also got Thirst from the guy who did Old Boy, which is brilliant.

Just recently received the following from Amazon:

Fight Club (Blu-Ray)
Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country (Blu-Ray)
Star Trek VIII: First Contact (Blu-Ray)
The Boondock Saints (Blu-Ray)
Braveheart (Blu-Ray)

Not too shabby for $50.

Figured I’d go for the sequel too since people seem to like it.

Are they the new DVD releases?  Nice to have a good transfer of these at last.

And yes, “Stepfather 2” is a worthy sequel and the two films play very well together.

Yes, they are the new releases. Hope to get my brother to watch them with me back to back so we can do a double title podcast. Good to hear that they play well together.

They are slightly guilty of being the poor man’s Criterion, but they do good work more often than not. I just recently picked up their Ashes of Time and Chungking Blurays - Chungking is a little too dark and both releases are a little light on extras, but otherwise fine. I may only have a tiny HD collection, but every one’s a winner so far. smile

Some cheapy finds:

“After…” - (£1)

“Aquarium” - (50p)

“The Cars that ate Paris” - (£1)
A teenage fave and one of the cult movie staples in my formative years when it used to be on TV.
