At the risk of re-starting an existing thread (or dozens, ha)...

Any recommendations for a blu-ray player that plays DVDs from all regions, both NTSC and PAL?

My DVD player handles everything I give it. I hope to find a blu-ray player to take over the job.

I’ve searched Twitch and other knowledgeable forums, but have found confusing or conflicting answers so far. Anyone have a player they swear by?

Thanks!

The DVD Beaver guys are usually a good place to start:  http://www.dvdbeaver.com/FILM/hardware.htm

Thanks Kurt! Their review for the Sherwood BDP-5004 looks to be exactly what I want, at a fraction of what I’ve seen other supposedly region-free players run.

For gods sake man…make sure your TV can handle PAL/NTSC first and avoid my pitiful mistake.

“We’re sorry sir…but Sony only supplies PAL/NTSC capable Bravia TV’s to the Australasian and European markets. You live in Japan and therefore, have to twist and burn in agony.”

You’re kidding, right? That’s pathetic! Any modern television should be able to handle that…
Mind you, a lot of hardware can convert on the fly. My old (Pioneer) DVD-player also could convert PAL-NTSC and vice-versa when needed, it’s just that it was never eh… needed.

It’s a painful story my friend.
Bought a top of the line Bravia here in Japan and a top of the line Sony BluRay player in NZ to cover that region.
My happiness melted into fury and drunken bouts of online gaming when I found out the damn TV couldn’t do PAL.
Yep, I thought the old NTSC/PAL signal battle was a thing of the CTV era.

I was wrong…

Twisting the knife further is the cheapie Dvd player I bought in Osaka for $40 that played everything and converted to NTSC…which was happily thrown out the day I bought my new Blu.
Dammit.
