Geert Jan - October 19, 2007, 8:13pm

I just noticed you mention that French LE of Paprika only has French subtitles for the commentary. Are you (and people in general) aware that the Dutch DVD also has the commentary with Dutch, and if I remember correctly, also English subtitles?

Geert Jan,

I’ve been painfully aware of that ever since its release all the way back in June…
But I figured the book would be in French, and I can read that a bit. So I chose the book over the English subs for the commentary…
I’m still glad with the super-duper edition. I collect those, so I’m quite happy. But I’m very disappointed that they didn’t translate the 760 page book.

I’m fully counting on a 1-disc version of Paprika hitting the 8 EUR bucket next year, in which case I’ll snatch it up for the Dutch/English subs on the commentary!

The Hong Kong Limited Edition of “Tekkon Kinkreet” arrived last week, and it might be the best value-for-money in the list! Remember this edition cost me the same (or even less) than importing a region 1 or 2 version of this movie.

Wonderful packaging, two discs, great A/V, and the booklets are both in full-color and classy (even though they’re exclusively in Chinese.
And you get the poster as well…

Pictures!

The inner box with content:

Smashing, and for less than 25 EUR including P&P;!  :D

Yeah I’m thinking of sticking my R2 UK disc on ebay and grabbing this one even more than I was before!

Very impressive edition, especially for the price.  Very tempting. Must resist. Already got Blu-Ray version and manga.

A Golden Oldie, but still available: The “Dawn of the Dead” Ultimate Edition.

It contains three versions of Romero’s classic: the original theatrical edit, the (longer) director’s cut, and the (shorter, but with music by Goblin)) Italian cut. Also there is a fourth disc with not one, but two kick-ass documentaries about Romero’s “dead” films.

Here are pictures.

The flimsy outer box:

The inner foldout, containing 4 discs and two inlays (including a comic book):

Uncoiling its innards:

All is revealed:

got burned by the Pans Labyrinth DVD release (did you all see the “leather book” edition ?!!)- I bought the US 2-disc edition because Borders had a little pamphlet that other stores didn’t.

Anyway, disappointed by the plain jane US version, this time I decided to do some more research before plunking down my money for another of my fave movies of the year - Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep.
So I present to you the 2 disc limited edition DVD set from Korea!

and excuse the cramped pictures.

The set seemingly has the same extras as the US set but they’re put across 2 discs.
It’s got a corrugated cardboard cut out on its slipcover, the wraparound rainbow on it is a sticker, a film cell from the Korean subtitled print, and says its limited to 1000 copies. As you can see the discs look like records. It is region 3 Korea.

Great shots.  I just got mine in the mail on Friday and watched it yesterday - didn’t take any shots yet.

Another VERY unusual Limited Edition for a VERY unusual movie:

Dasepo Naughty Girls!

Here it is, quite a bit larger than an Amaray:
dasepo-DVD-1.JPG

Out of its ribbed (oo-er!) sleeve…
dasepo-DVD-2.JPG

The neon plastic plates slide around the screw (oo-er!) to give up its discs.
dasepo-DVD-3.JPG

The folder is hidden within the holographic backboards.
dasepo-DVD-4.JPG

The folder unfolds to a poster, explaining the characters’ relationships and the way they looked in the original comic the film is based on.
dasepo-DVD-5.JPG

Fun! And the film was quite a laugh too…

I’ve had this for a while now and while the look of the case is great the size bugs me a little.

Just looking at dvdcompare to check versions of Day Watch—apparently there’s a new (unsubbed) Russian 4 disc release that includes a neon light in the case that “blinks” or something or other.

Also, Yesasia has some beautiful pics of a $130 Japanese R2 Ratatouille release:

EDIT by Ardvark: sorry, tinkered a bit with that picture to see if I could make it show, but it doesn’t!
EDIT EDIT: Now it does.

It’s been a while since I put something here, so it’s time for a golden oldie: “The Hulk Limited 3-disc Edition”.

This was heavily overstocked in The Netherlands so I bought this new, at a major outlet, for a scant 10 Euro…

The outer box is nothing if not spectacular:
hulkdvd1.JPG

Took me a while to find the actual DVD’s, as they are kept in what could rightfully be called a secret compartment on the inside of the lid:
hulkdvd2.JPG

The contents: several booklets with lots of sketches, some cards and a replica of the first issue of “The Incredible Hulk”.

The contents spread out:

Is that one still available over there?  I was thinking about trying to get a copy of the R2 UK LE off Amazon marketplace, but most of them aren’t listed as “new”.

If nobody else sticks up pics of the Bladerunner “Attache Case” soon, I’ll try and do some this weekend.

Hm. It’s been a while since I last saw one. The one shop that I know for sure to have it asks 25 Euro for it, which I find rather steep…

I’m still eagerly awaiting it! My guess is customs stopped the package, meaning two weeks delay and a fine.
Aw…
