This is my first time posting in this thread and posting in these forums in a while.
Here is the limited edition Air Doll DVD. I picked it up during my trip to Japan a few months back.
I need a better place to take these pictures but I feel these turned out okay.
Here’s a shout out for our very own Niels Matthijs: “Hey Onderhond, feast your eyes on THIS!”
And “THIS” happens to be the Out-Of-Print Japanese Limited Edition BluRay of Mamoru Oshii’s “Avalon”. Regionfree and English-friendly, as ever with these stellar releases by Honneamise.
Here’s what it looks like:
Here are the contents: one BluRay, one DVD and a 16-page glossy booklet.
All contents opened. The Amarays only have some folders and Dolby-stickers in them, but the booklet is really quite nice, albeit in Japanese only:
That’s some pretty awesome stuff, though I guess I’m not enough of a collector to buy a new release of a film I already own.
Fancy extras aside, there’s only one important thing on an Avalon DVD and that’s color handling. DVD Beaver had a good comparison list, showing all from semi-colored to oversaturated sepia.
I actually own two version of the film. The Dutch one for the near 4-hours of extras on the disc, the HK bootleg for watching the film (best color quality I could find).
this is not the briefcase edition nor the steelcase one. but it’s still a nice set for me. i was surprised that it also contains a set of beautiful glossy cards. there’s no mention of the cards anywhere in the description on the box! so it was a big surprise when i opened the box and saw them. R2 set. (sorry for the weird tinge; hotel room lights don’t make good pictures)

Hmmm… By the looks of it that’s EXACTLY what’s inside the briefcase!
The only things you’re missing is the briefcase itself and the model spinner…
(... and the origami unicorn…
... and the lenticular image…)
But you do have all of the important stuff!
Currently I’m watching “Ouran High School Host Club” and it’s a hoot. The Funimation boxset is coded region A and B, meaning us poor people in Europe, Africa and Australia can watch it too!
Packagingwise it’s not a totally “pimped” set, but there are two reasons why I took pictures of it for this forum.
Reason #1:
With its pink-metallic cover this must be THE gayest boxset ever…
Sliding out the contents:
Nicely decorated discholder:
All contents opened:
So far, so good, but the marketing department decided on adding some extra detail.
Which is reason #2: the inside of the outer box is covered with small metallic pictures of heraldry, bunny rabbits and teddybears.
As the whole series is about decadence and exteme opulence, this extra attention for detail is supremely fitting.
that Ouran set ...
Ard, if you weren’t married with kids, i would think you were ...
Well, being married with kids doesn’t actually proof anything one way or the other!
That packaging yells “flaming homo” like nothing else, I do agree.
But the series is an absolutely brilliant riff on typical “guy” behavior, be it “guy - girl” or “guy - guy”, and spoofs exactly everything I hate about typical shonen or shoja anime. The homosexual angle is exploited mercilessly throughout the series by all of the main characters as an occasional marketing gimmick to get even MORE girls attracted to them. By all means this should have made this a cynical and obnoxious series, but somehow it isn’t. It’s wicked funny too, and far more clever than I expected. There are a pair of twin brothers in this who play-act a forbidden(!) homosexual(!!) incestuous(!!!) relationship whenever their swooning female fans are nearby, and it’s a running gag that never gets old. Coupled with some beautifully exaggerated consumer fetishism and snobbery that is displayed by the ultra-rich it makes for a pretty unique background to base a whole series on.
Me and my wife are now at episode 10 and we’re still consistently laughing out loud at least once every ten minutes or so. At this point every episode has managed to make the characters a bit richer and complex. If the whole series can keep up this speed and momentum in character development, this just might become one of my favorite anime ever.
Even though I have had the “Ouran High School Host Club” set for more than a week now, and have handled it many times getting the discs in-and-out (my wife and I watch one episode each day), there is something new I saw this evening when the light hit it in a certain way and it warrants a picture or two.
The faces of all of the club hosts are printed into the pink borders. It’s very subtle and a total bitch to photograph: my fingerprints showed ten times as clear as the portraits and I had to wipe the box with a damp cloth before the effect even became visible to the camera.
Anyway, this is the cover with some extreme lighting on it:
A close-up of two of the portraits, with reduced brightness and heightened contrast. I swear that watermarks are easier to spot than these things:
Again this is fully in line with the style and intent of the whole series.
Bonuspoints to Funimation for delivering an excellent packaging for an excellent boxset!
