So why do Asian releases get more lavish attention than European/American discs? Is it because the larger Asian market goes for this sort of thing and the Western one prefer less flash packaging (except you gutys of course :D )?
Strangely enough, no.
The Korean domestic market for bought movies on DVD’s is lousy, collectors of them are considered weird over there. But these editions are really cheap to make, the special packaging for “Arahan” above apparently only cost a couple of thousand dollars extra for the entire run. Therefore it is sometimes worthwhile for a distributor to invest in a special package.

How much did those box sets set you lot back? I’m guessing they weren’t cheap…
No, yes, no…
You pay extra for the packaging, booklets etcetera, sure, but Korean and Chinese aren’t extraordinarily expensive either like the Japanese editions. Those two Japanese “Mind-Game” editions were a staggering 250 and 110 USD!
But a normal Japanese LE might be between 60 and 130 USD, while Korean and Chinese waver between 25 and 50.
And you can always hunt for bargains. Sites like YesAsia and DVDfromKorea allow you to search for LE’s, and if you look at the list you’ll find plenty of these “pimped” editions for less than 25 USD. most of the time the problem is not price but availability, so many of them go OOP (Out Of Print) quickly…
Current Korean pimped bargains would be:
Daisy:
Dasepo naughty Girls:
Death Note/ Death Note Last Name boxset:
That last one may seem more expensive than it is: for that price you get two movies, and you can check the package on the first page of this topic in post number 13. A gorgeous set.
